The Max Carbon Radiation Science Center is home to the UW Nuclear Reactor Lab (UWNR) and the Characterization Laboratory for Irradiated Materials (CLIM). The UWNR is an open pool type thermal fission nuclear reactor licensed to operate at 1MW steady state power. The reactor is used to teach nuclear engineering classes and also provides irradiation services and other support for various research projects requiring or utilizing radioisotopes and ionizing photon and neutron radiation.
